Design for Obama book launch at TASCHEN New York:

On November 4th, the one-year anniversary of Barack Obama’s historic election, TASCHEN New York hosted Spike Lee, Aaron Perry-Zucker, and Steven Heller to celebrate the launch of their book DESIGN FOR OBAMA.
A crowd of over 250 fans showed up to meet the editors, including over 25 of the book’s contributors. Some contributors even flew in for the event from as far as Seattle, Toronto, and the Dominican Republic! Additionally, around 15 members of the press were in attendance, including representatives from Maxim, New York Daily News, Rachel Ray, Metropolitan Home, The Source, Trace, Allure, Fortune, Teen Vogue, InStyle, and Vanity Fair.

As a contributing artist to the book I wish I could have attended the book launch, but it was held in NYC and I was held in TLV. Fortunately filmmaker Spike Lee who co-edited the book was gracious enough to pose for a photo with my poster:

Steven Heller, co-chair of the School of Visual Arts’ MFA Designer as Author Program, writes the “Visuals” column for the New York Times Book Review, and is the author of 120 books on design, illustration, and satiric art -- including TASCHEN’s Design For Obama which features my own original English-French-Hebrew design on page 95. The book will be available worldwide in two weeks, so in the meantime you can check out Heller’s discussion with the Philadelphia chapter of AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) on the outpouring of posters for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. Heller also compares today’s political graphics to the campaign posters of a previous generation, and the relationship between democracy and design.

November is just around the corner and I am anxiously waiting to get my hands on Design for Obama, the book I participated in. Luckily, the publisher, Taschen, just made the entire book available online. You can leaf through all the pages, albeit the viewing quality is just enough to make you interested in buying the book.

Three months ago I was asked to participate in a new art book by TASCHEN. The Hebrew posters I designed for the Obama campaign had reached the right people and will be included in the upcoming anthology. The book is scheduled for sale on November 2009 to mark one year of the Obama presidency, and it looks like it is coming along just fine, as I just found out it now has an official name and a cover design:

About two months ago I published a post about a new Design For Obama (DFO) art book by TASCHEN that will include my Hebrew Obama graphics. Following is a quick update I got via Twitter:

My Father is Palestinian From Northern Palestine

I am starting to get more and more uncomfortable with the messages I get from the US President I helped elect. First it was the Cairo speech in which the word ‘Palestine‘ was used in a way that insinuates the discussed state already exists. Apparently the only eyebrows that were raised were mine and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow‘s.

But now the White House has put out a video celebrating Muslim Americans who serve in the U.S. Government. That was all fine and dandy, until I got to the part about Lema Bashir whose father is apparently “Palestinian from Northern Palestine“. Neither the White House nor the State Department thought the wording was inappropriate – on the contrary, courtesy of the State Department who translated this video into 10 languages, you can now choose the captioning to be insulted in:

Northern Palestine?! Where the hell is that?

Israeli Television Starts Broadcasting Fox News in Hebrew

On yesterday’s Friday at Five program on Israel Channel 1, the chyron read “The age of Hussein Obama“. Broadcast one day after the Cairo speech, the usage of the American President’s middle name is an obvious attempt to say ‘He sides with them now’. Taken straight out of a Fox News’ textbook, referring to the leader of the free world by the name ‘Hussein’ has gained popularity in recent weeks within the office of the Israeli prime-minister, as Ben Caspit reports in Maariv. Since the Israel Broadcast Authority is controlled by the PM office, the phrase has naturally trickled down to the mainstream media, if you can still call Channel 1 that.

Knesset Member Daniel Ben Simon was a guest on that show and pointed out on the air that the graphics should be fixed, to which hosts Kineret Barashi and Uri Levi played dumb saying that Obama himself uses his middle name. MK Ben Simon tried to explain that no one calls the previous president Walker Bush, but the hosts just smiled derisively. Here is the short exchange:

I find this derogatory use of the word ‘Hussein’ despicable, Islamophobic and somewhat childish: when the US president says things we like, we call him Baruch Obama -- and when he says things we don’t like, he’s Hussein Obama?

Inside The Obama White House

Just finished watching NBC News’ two hour special Inside The Obama White House. Including the Cairo speech, that makes for 3 hours of Obama-time in less than 24 hours. If you are a sucker for the White House like me, you absolutely have to watch this. Brian Williams‘ report is extensive, insightful and successful in cramming 150 hours of footage from 32 video cameras into one concise piece. To my surprise, Rahm Emanuel is not the only Israeli angle of this broadcast, as the soundtrack includes samples of Oren Lavie‘s hit ‘Her Morning Elegance’.

Obama: Our Stock Will Rise High!

Now, I realize the White House may have been busy with the whole FlickrGate thing these last couple of days, but can we agree posting the following photo on the official White House website was not the brightest idea?

I’m not sure if this image offends all Jews or just this one, but after 27 months and scores of Obama photos, I think this is the first photo I have seen that does not compliment him.

P.S.
Due to recent comments left on my blog, I feel I need to explain these kind of observations:
My beef is not with Obama, as he is free to raise his hands as much as he likes.
My beef is not with White House photographer Chuck Kennedy, as he is free to take as much photos as he likes.
My beef is with the WhiteHouse.gov editor who exhibited poor judgement by posting this photo which does not flatter the president and does not convey the right sentiments towards his constituents.
